Avilin: Each of us has our own Belarusian star, and we must not let it fade away.
On July 16th, EuroRadio hosted Tsimafei Avilin, a specialist in ethnoastronomy, a master of historical sciences, and a researcher of early 20th-century urban folklore. Belarusian society is divided, but it is not a sharp division where an insurmountable wall arises between people. We are like two streams of the same river, sometimes flowing separately and then merging after some time, says Tsimafei Avilin. However, even such a division hinders Belarusians from formulating their national idea.
The theme of the meeting was Ethnoastronomy: How did people of traditional culture perceive the sky and its objects?
We are familiar with ancient myths and legends from various peoples about the stars. But were there any legends among the Belarusians about celestial inhabitants?
How did people of traditional culture perceive the sky and its objects? You will find answers to these and other questions during our meeting. We will explore folk beliefs related to stars, constellations, meteors, and the Moon. The sources of our material include expedition records of the author and other researchers, works of Belarusian folklore, as well as the "bookish" folk astronomy from ancient East Slavic literature.
Avilin T.V. - "Maps are easy, but for science - effortlessly!"
The speaker started working on creating maps based on various GIS systems (DivaGIS, MapGIS, qGIS) in 2013 while working at the Academy of Sciences. Some maps on folk Belarusian astronomy were included in the monograph "Between Heaven and Earth: Ethnoastronomy" (showing the areas of astronomers for the first time), as well as numerous articles. The speaker also prepared around 120 maps for the Belarusian Folklore-Ethnolinguistic Atlas (currently in print), a series of articles in "Belarusian Folklore" on topics such as mermaids, werewolves, the origin of children, the distribution of various folk motifs, and many others. The results of the cartography presented in these published works reflect the spatial distribution of various aspects of traditional culture.

Belarus: in Embrace of Stars
Sometimes it's enough to see the true night sky once to forever fall in love with it. And sometimes it's enough to see your country beneath the starry sky once to love it even more. The crystal-clear expanse of the Braslau Lakes, the polar glow over the Vileika Reservoir, the Milky Way amidst old oaks and above the walls of ancient temples and castles... In this short film, Belarus is portrayed against the backdrop of the cosmos, under the boundless night sky, amidst the shimmering stars. ©Viktar Malyschyts.
